Be Safe

Not all computer users recognize the danger of a hard disk crash and most of them don't even plan for it. Even fewer users recognize the dangers of system corruption which can come from viruses or, just as often, as random unwanted occurrences, which are impossible to track down.

Over time, layer after layer of software may be added to your computer. It is not unusual for there to be more than one copy of the same program resident on your computer (by accident). Hard disk fragmentation and lost clusters use up space and are quite beyond the average user to solve. Internet access generates large quantities of temporary files which fill up your hard disk.

Many professionals believe that the only way to keep your computer operating efficiently is to regularly re -formant your hard disk and re-load your your programs and data. Again this requires very efficient organization and is a task beyond most average users. However, even if you do not wish to go that far you still face the two major risks:

If this all sounds like gobble-de-goop you really need Be Safe. If it all sounds familiar you will appreciate the advantages an expert system offers in managing these task:

Be Safe in operation

Be Safe comes in a self loading executable. Once loaded you will find this shortcut on your desktop:

Once you click on it the Main GUI appears:

The five main buttons open up the function GUIs. For example the top button, Programs from the Internet, shows the following Internet Program Management GUI:

You use this (and the other function GUIs) to keep a record of the original executable from which you loaded any particular program and to manage those records afterwards. If you click on Add, the Add Program GUI will be revealed:

You can use this to browse your hard drive and find the correct file. The file is automatically saved when you confirm on the Internet Program Management GUI.

The other buttons take you through similar functionality for programs on CD and the data associated with your programs. Save Data then saves all the data files you have selected. One of the features of Be Safe is that it saves your programs and data in a structured manner:

A directory called Be_Safe is created in your main root directory - C:\. Immediately beneath this are two directories - CabinetData and CabinetPrograms. You files are saved inside these cabinets and, as you can see, the data is saved in a structure which mirrors the original structure on your C drive. This is essential if you are to be able to restore the data for future use. You should save your data daily and at least once a week copy the entire directory Be_Safe onto a CD and store it somewhere away from your computer.

The Restore button allows you to manage the restoration of data and programs.
